Good fun to experiment, as you describe. I'm more of a thrower inner rather than an actual cook book follower though. That way I can look at whats available and then figure out what to make from it (Except if there's some friends coming around for a posh nosh). As a lover of words, it's interesting to me that we've ended up with 'foodism' and 'foodist' as a synonym for 'gourmand'. I have strongly negative associations with 'ism' and 'ist', particularly when it comes to movements and choices. There's 'sexism' and 'racism', and so forth. On the other hand, I guess there's 'nudism' and 'feminism', which obviously aren't societal ills. Maybe it's because I hear the negative 'isms' more than the positive ones?
