Derek: good point about the rain gear! Thankfully I happen to already have a rain jacket and pants, which are great on drizzly days, they’re no match for the super nasty raining buckets. I’ve already noticed the need for a helmet cover, and booties and gloves will also be necessary at some point.

If you're going to ride in the rain as the seasons change, I recommend some good Gore-Tex gear, a helmet cover, and some booties to go over your shoes. When the real chilly autumn and winter rain hits, you'll need them. More frequent maintenance, including bike washing, will also be necessary because the crud builds up faster in the wet. Also, for those who don't need the bulk of panniers, Mountain Equipment Co-op has some cool rack-top bags (you can see mine in use) that convert to mini-backpacks when you remove them. Useful, even in addition to panniers.

Great post, hope you keep riding in. I need to get off my butt and ride, even if it is much further than you, I should still do it considering I call myself a cyclist!
