I have a midterm in 2.5 hours. I have yet to start studying.

-I need to stay at work for the next 0.5h
-It’ll take me another 0.5h to get home
-Where I’ll spend 0.75h shoveling nutrition and caffeine into my maw
-That leaves 0.25h for me to put my notes in the right order, hoping that through osmosis, some of the information on them will seep into my brain
-Then I’ve got 0.5h to get to class and hope I’m smart enough to keep pulling this off

Some days I almost (almost, not quite) wish I weren’t as smart as I am. You see, I’ve never actually learned how to study. So I just don’t. Grad school has never been in the plans, so I did enough to get by with my 3.25, and was happy with it.

One of these days my lack of studying is going to seriously bite me in the ass. Will today be that day?

UPDATE: (8:50pm) I have not lost the magic. The amount of information I retained was just right. I’m still safe… for now…

I wear my makeup pretty much exactly the same every day. Lately though, I’ve been doing something a bit different. I’m trying to wear lipstick (instead of chap-stick) every day. Mostly because I have a LOT of lipstick thanks to Clinique bonus time. It’s all moisturizing lipstick - so it does the same job as chap-stick - and pulls my entire look together.

Since I adopted the coloured-lips behaviour, I’ve noticed something odd… I’m getting a lot of compliments on my EYE makeup (never the lips). Whether I’m wearing glasses or contacts, the same shadow that I’ve been wearing for the past 6 months or so has been complimented all over town. But only on the days I actually remember to keep up my lipstick re-application.

Anyone wanna take a stab at explaining what the heck’s going on?

My dad returned from Japan yesterday, and brought back a few sweet gifts for my mom, brothers, and me. Pics of the swords he got my brothers, and the stuff he got me are all on flickr. I didn’t think to take a picture of the sweaters & jewelry box he brought back for my mom before they drove me home. D’oh!

One thing I love about my dad is that he has really great taste. I’m usually always thrilled with whatever he brings back from his travels, or whenever he goes shopping for birthday or Christmas gifts.

It’s time, again, to revamp the blog. I’ve never had my “very own” website before (I feel like I’m moving out on my own all over again). Can you help me out with any of these things:

UPDATE: Friday Feb. 25th, 8:48am

1. URL: I know I can get a .ca domain for $10 from about a billion people. However I think a .com would suit the URL I want a bit better. Anyone have any idea how much those are and where to get it? purchased this morning through dotster.com.

2. Hosting: Where, Who, How Much? going to go with Site5

3. Software: Should I stick with MT? Or move to Expression Engine or WordPress or something else entirely? Recommendations? I’m a big fan of the open source movement, so I’m going to go with WordPress. It’s time to try something different anyway :)

4. Design: I have a definite concept in mind, and just need someone to put it all together for me. I don’t have $149 USD to fork out to the Moxie Girls (or anyone else for that matter), but I’m willing to negotiate and bargain for cash & barter services if you, or anyone you know, is looking for experience and/or a little cash on the side. Negotiating with a couple people to get it all up and running.

Thanks! And thanks again everyone for all your helpful input!

Go watch this. Take the 8 minutes. It’s the closest you’ll come to watching your life flash before your eyes without actually dying.

UPDATE: (10:03pm) Now that the glow has worn off, it seems that after re-reading my description above, I was perhaps a bit overenthusiastic about the significance of the piece. I can’t help it… when someone starts talking about technology convergence, and uses hegemony in a sentence, well, I get a little unreasonably excited.

Via Metafilter, we find an in-depth analysis of the lyrical stylings of Jon Bon Jovi.

I probably take more pleasure in reading this than I should, but Bed of Roses was my first ever slow dance with a boy (Shaun Cudney - are you out there somewhere?). Every time I hear it, I’m momentarily transported back to that High School Gym (Hope Secondary School for those playing along at home) in 1994 with the overbearing scent of too much knock-off CK One trying to mask the BO and Clearasyl.

Aah… memories.

Since it’s still pretty chilly in this part of the world, I wore the hat out tonight - and it’s official, the guy at Subway thinks I look cute in it, so it must be great!

I’m going to be Bowling for Big Brothers on Friday, March 4th.

I know y’all wanna pony up some cashola for the kids. All it takes is $10 - so go without the grande mocha-loca happy bunny soy-a-riffic latte for a couple days, and do something good for the world instead.

Email me if you’re interested in donating.

UPDATE: (4:24pm) I’m bowling on a work team, although if you want to gather a team of 5 (and raise at least $50 each) I don’t know if the event is full yet. If it is, just pass along the cash to me plztnx!

UPDATE: (11:47am March 6/05) I am a huge dork. The title was supposed to be turkey (bowling slang for 3 strikes in a row), not rooster. I knew it was barnyard fowl of some sort….>/i>

Peter Tupper’s article on the information he gleaned from Northern Voice has just been posted in the Tyee.

I find it a bit ironic that as a journalist, whose article includes a segment on “the blogger as citizen journalist,” he (awkwardly) jumps around the who, what, where, when and how of the conference and sessions he attended - and entirely misses the why. From what little I remember of my own short forays into journalism, the why is the integral part of the article - the part that makes people care about reading the other 4 W’s.

Tupper writes that “[t]he soft glow of laptop and handheld screens in the lecture hall made it clear to me that this was a gathering of the early adopters. I felt a moment of technological inferiority, clutching my steno pad and cassette recorder.” I would assume from that remark that Tupper was brand new to blogging and had come to the conference to learn more about the medium. However a quick google search reveals that he’s been blogging since at least mid-2004, knows enough to have a Creative Commons License, and should be able to at least attempt to answer some of the questions he sets out asking in his article, especially since he asserts that “[c]onferences like Northern Voice are where people try to answer those questions.” Alas, no answers were to be found.

Instead, Tupper offers inadequate and incoherent summaries of what he pulled from the different speakers. He leaves the question of “why blog?” unanswered, then moves to speak briefly about the fact that RSS exists, though he never mentions exactly what it is, save for an aisde that “The development of the RSS standard is an unusually convoluted story.” It only gets worse from there on in.

I started this post having skimmed his article, and intended to read a bit deeper to hopefully pull some value out of it and point others to the posting when I myself am asked “What is a Blogging Conference anyway, and why did you go?”

Instead, I’m left wondering if his impression is an accurate reflection of what someone on the “outside” of blogging really sees: a bunch of technophiles, using confusing tools in a confusing way, to spread information inadequately - or so says the final section of his article explaining why American journalistic-style bloggers are so much better than their Canadian counterparts.

Personally, I learned a lot at the conference about what I feel my blog may be lacking, and how I’d like to take it to the next level. The only reason I haven’t posted my notes is that others have already done a much better job of it (find feeds to their notes here). I wouldn’t exactly call myself an early adopter - I’ve only been at this for about two years now - but I like to think I have a grasp on the concept of blogging, if not all of the accompanying technologies. From what I gathered, my peers felt much the same way about the sessions they attended (many of whom have been blogging much longer than I have).

But did Northern Voice miss addressing the “what is a blog?” segment of attendees? Were there enough of them in attendance to merit that kind of content? Did we as bloggers unintentionally exclude those new to the genre? Was the conference even marketed as a “find out about blogging” event - as opposed to an “improve your blogging skillset” event? (Juding from the audience response to Tim Bray’s question “how many of you have a blog?” I would assume the latter - please correct me if I’m wrong…)

But Tupper doesn’t bring any of that into his hodge-podge summary. I’d be much more interested in hearing whether or not Mr. Tupper actually had his questions answered at the end of the day, and if he found value in the conference or not as a self-confessed late(r) adopter of blogging.

I’m hoping Tupper was just having a bad-writing day, and actually got more out of the conference than he indicates in the article, that the questions he posed were answered, and he took away some useful tools for his own blogging experience. Otherwise to the community of blogging enthusiasts and evangelists everywhere, I need to say Lucy, we gots some ’splainin’ to do!

And the berbed is complete. Pics now up on flickr.

It’s been a very long weekend so far. I can’t wait to crawl into the berbed tonight and crash.

[UPDATE]: Monday Feb. 21, 9:00am. The only problem with the berbed thus far, is the extreme willpower needed to actually crawl out of it when the alarm goes off….

I’m at the Vancouver Northern Voice Blogging Conference today.

I forgot my camera. Good thing there will likely be a bajillion pictures on flickr before the end of the day. Some of them may be there already. (Update: as of posting time there are at least 24 pages of photos - find them here)

If you’re here too, you can find me on msn: wierdchick[at]hotmail[dot]com (as long as my wireless holds up - which is a whole other issue). Add me and say “hi.”

I finally had my interview. I think it went well, but only time will tell whether or not my particular skill set matches what the team lead will want. I’ll know before Monday.

My ebay order did indeed ship the next business day, but nobody emailed me to tell me that. I still don’t have a tracking number. Hopefully it’s not held up at Customs too long. I promise it’s just a battery - not a bomb.

It’s official, I totally busted through my plateau. So of course I had McDonald’s for lunch.

I’m going to pick up my new bed tonight - and hopefully get it home and assembled without missing too much of the Vancouver blogger meetup. You’re going aren’t you? Ironically, I’ll only get to sleep in the berbed* one night before spending the weekend at Sue’s, spooning with her cats.

I don’t think soy milk is meant to be out all day. I put it in my coffee this morning, and just poured the last of the lukewarm dregs out of the thermos now. My coffee bears a striking visual and textural resemblance to miso soup. Of course, I’m drinking it anyway.

More than I’m sure you ever wanted to know:

Your Boobies’ Names Are: Dessert and Dinner

Having Dessert come first goes against every type A tendency in my poor addled brain. It also doesn’t give me any sort of guide as to which is which! Also, I loathe the word Boobies when used to describe my own.

I haven’t really listened to Z95.3 in a long time. Probably around 6 years. But I was sick of all the other stations, so I figured I’d give it a go again this morning.

They are still playing all the same songs they were playing 6 years ago, when I was dating that red-haired boy who wasn’t very nice.

Time to move on over to the Fox.

FREAK. ING. OUT.

I’m supposed to be in an interview right now. But I am not. My interviewer is stuck in traffic.

I barely made it to 9:00am. I CAN’T WAIT ANY LONGER! IT’S DRIVING ME CRAZY!

All of the candidates are really different (they interview all internal applicants) so I suppose it’ll be a wait and see game for what kind of person they want. Of course, I’d hire me in a heartbeat - but I’m biased that way.

Please send mojo asap.

UPDATE: (9:55am) I just got off the phone with the interviewer. We’re going to reschedule. I’m still waiting for a date/time. Hate.

UPDATE the Second (4:48pm) The interviewer never did call me back regarding the date and time for the rescheduled appointment. Since she mentioned to everyone else who had an interview today that she had another one late tomorrow, and that she’s not in on Friday (so they’d likely hear on Monday) I’m assuming I’ll be slotted in tomorrow somewhere. I am so pissed off right now though, I could seriously hurt someone or something. I HATE being jerked around.
