Actually, I guess it was sugar, then blood. Oh well, no matter.

Friday night I lost my Krispy Kreme virginity. After standing in line for an hour I enjoyed my first “hot now” fresh off the line doughnut. Meh. It did melt in my mouth, but not in a particularly good way. It was less melting as disintegrating into a mass of pure sugar. For someone who relishes in rich, sweet treats, even I found this a bit too much to take.

Needless to say, I did not buy a box to take home and torture myself with. Nobody needs a dozen 500 calorie snacks lying around seducing them when trying to be healthy.

Yesterday I went down and donated blood again. Finally. It’s only been about 18 months, heh. I guess this means the Canadian Blood Services people can stop harassing me for another 54 days.

It should be easier to get out and donate now, though. The Dunsmuir clinic is about 2 minutes away from my new office - instead of trekking down to the Oak Street one. I forgot how woozy it makes me though. I seem to take a really long time to recover from the blood loss - a good 45 minutes before I felt well enough to go home (a 45 minute trip) and it still took another couple hours and some nutrition intense snacks before I felt 100%.

I should probably have my poor ticker checked out one of these days. Doctors keep asking me if I’ve been diagnosed with a heart murmer every time they listen to it (no, but perhaps I should be?), and it takes a long time to recover from cardio activity too.

And today, I get to go to work. Yee Haw. At least It’s some overtime.

Being in the world of work for the past 8 months (as opposed to the world of academia) I feel like I’ve been getting steadily dumber.

Not that my work doesn’t require a great deal of thought - but it’s very specific, and I feel like my mind’s stuck in a place where I can only reasonably process information within a certain context. I used to pour through policy documents as easily as if they were Harry Potter novels. Right now I’m finding myself having to read and re-read entire clauses of the Workers’ Compensation Act 2 and 3 times over before they make sense.

I also feel out of touch with what’s going on in the intellectual world. Friends are exploring and discussing politics, human rights issues, philosophy, theology… and I’m contemplating what kind of bottled water to order. I went out for brunch last Sunday with some people from SFU, and their conversation flowed flawlessly over issues that I hadn’t even thought about since I left school. Later that day with a different group of friends, I even went so far as to assert that Halifax is in Newfoundland. That’s something any 4th grade Social Studies student would have called me on.

So for anyone that’s been here before - seemingly too busy to bother being involved in the real issues - how did you get back into it? What are you reading, seeing, who are you talking to? Where can I go from here?

‘Cuz I’m Saved by the Bell

Ok people. Pop culture icon for anyone who was a teenager in the 1990’s. DUSTIN DIAMOND (aka Screech) is going to be at Yuk Yuk’s from March 4-7.

I think I’ll go on the 4th - it’s the most convenient night for me.

Who else is in?

Apparently you can do everything in your power to lead people in the right direction,

BUT YOU CAN’T MAKE THEM THINK.

Do you ever have one of those days where you think you see someone you know, every time you turn around?

Yesterday was one of those days. And the “someone” was my highschool boyfriend. I haven’t seen the guy since 1998, and as far as I know, he lives in Kelowna now.

Yet I swear I saw him at least 5 times yesterday. Odd.

Aah. I finally got around to cleaning up the blogroll. I deleted anyone who hasn’t updated in the last month, and added a few blogs that were hanging around in my favourites that I hadn’t gotten around to blogrolling yet.

If I used to have you on here and don’t anymore, and you start writing again, please let me know, and I’ll start visiting again.

BTW… a reminder that I’m doing pretty well at keeping up with the Body-for-Life blog lately, if anyone was reading that. I know I wasn’t being the best updater for a while.

I’ve got a crush. I never rarely get crushes. I’ve never been one to lust over celebrities etc.

But I have a crush on “Boston Rob” from Survivor. I can’t help it. I get little butterflies inside when I think about him.

I’m so lame.

Disclaimer: Bitter singles are probably best directed to fuckoff now.

Hope everyone had a happy Valentine’s day - whether you had a sweetheart to share it with or not. I know that any kind of good company and good will can make a day or night special :)
I had a really good Valentine’s day myself. Didn’t do anything too special, just took some time to indulge in the day and each other. Had a nice lunch at Earl’s, then afternoon coffee at Starbucks. In the spirit of making the day a good one for both of us, we grabbed some snacks and some wine, and watched the Canadiens game at 4. Well, he watched. I napped.

After that, we went to the John Mayer concert. Oh my. He’s such a cute little performer. I was quite impressed with the Pacific Colliseum as a venue. The accoustics were actually pretty darned Ok. Better than many shows I’ve seen at the Garage, that’s for sure.

A couple points to note:
1. Maroon 5 is excellent live. After downloading a few of their album samples, I’ve decided that their recorded sound makes me want to vomit. Unfortunate for them.
2. See John Mayer live if ever you can. He was able to make a big venue feel intimate, spoke well when he chose too (neither too little or too much) and thanked everyone profusely for attending, despite the price. He played just the right mix of older and newer stuff, and only included one “brand new” song (lyrics and melodies subject to change, of course). He also didn’t play any of those horrid “tribute” covers that so many more seasoned acts tend to do.

And I was able to walk up (the security at the colliseum is decidedly much more forgiving than the thugs they usually employ at GM) from my 24th row seat to the front of the floor many times during the concert and snap a few pictures. Apologies for the blurriness. He’s a physical performer, and I was excited.

Overall, a lovely day that led into a lovely, relaxing Sunday, which will hopefully seguay into a good week :) I hope you all have one too!

I think people are out to try my patience today.

I am normally the most cool, calm, collected person (at least at work - any indications alluding to the contrary from my Boyfriend don’t count) - but seriously people. Give it a rest already.

I thought the sunshine was supposed to make people happier. Instead I’m getting nothing but snippiness from all sides.

But it’s ok. I am full of peace and serenity. I am working on my Office Zen and “my calming attitude alone will dignify the atmosphere in ways I might not even see.”

I certainly hope so.

Wait, no.

Make that Jen and the Amazing Technicolour Eyeball.

Hmm.. still not right.

The eye is not so much technicolour, as pink.

That’s right. I have Pink Eye.

Lovely.

Could this day get any better? Come on Universe, throw something else at me. I’m still standing…

.. is an angry and not at all happy bird.

The fire alarms started going off in my building this morning at around 4:30. They went back and forth, between on and off about four times, until sometime around 7:30.

Each time a firetruck would come screeching up, sirens wailing, firefighters would clamber out in full gear, and check things out to make sure all was well. By the third time, the firefighters weren’t dashing to the rescue as much as sauntering up the walk. I suppose it couldn’t have been fun for them either.

In any case, I just got to work about 15 minutes ago, and it already feels like it’s been a long day. Sadly, it’s hardly begun. Thank goodness for Yoga tonight, I could use the relaxation.

Following the thread on protests over tuition hikes on Darren’s and Donna’s blogs, I thought I’d post my own response:

I think students are notorious for being entirely too idealistic, and caught up in fighting for the impossible, instead of focusing on creating the plausable. Having taken my undergraduate degree in a department that focuses strongly on ideology (Communication) at a University that is decidedly leftist (SFU), I was exposed to this attitude for many years. I didn’t agree with the attitude then, and I don’t agree with it now.

We live in a capitalist society. It takes money to pay for everything, including education. We are not, and never will be fully communist and/or socialist, and asking for our government to provide communist and/or socialist solutions for capitalist problems is an exercise in futility.

Instead, lets focus on some solutions that work *with* the current societal structure.
