A recent entry on Darren’s blog really irked me (no offense to the writer or those who share the same opinion though). It was just a glaring example of why Vancouver turned into a “no fun city”

Mr. Barefoot seems to think that the fireworks, because they aren’t his cup of tea, aren’t worth the “trouble” that they cause. He figures that they don’t bring out tourists, and are just more hassle than they’re worth.

It’s precicely that type of attitude that has been the demise of many of Vancouver’s community events. All it takes is for a group of people to get it into their heads that a local event doesn’t do enough for the city, and if they squawk loud enough (I’m not insinuating that Darren would be one of said squawkers, all he did was post his opinion on his personal blog), eventually someone listens and without regard to fact or even popular opinion (because the squeaky wheel always gets the grease), the event is cancelled.

Of course, most people that attend events in Vancouver are from the city. No, most of the community events do not directly spawn tourst dollars. A + B does not always directly equal C, but there is a very strong ripple effect that’s felt throughout the city that cannot be denied.

Point A, the one that means the most to me, but the least in terms of direct financial benefit, is that of Community Spirit. Montreal didn’t become the “city of festivals” for the sole benefit of the people of Montreal, it did so in order to try and gain some tourist dollars. But I dare you to find any Canadians that are as proud as Montreallers of the city that they hail from. Not only is it good for those within the community, but it’s good for their attitudes. And even here on the left coast, we’re aware of that civic pride.

Point B is a little lesson in tourism. The overall impression that Vancouver is a world-class city offering world-class events is what will bring people here. Having some of those events occur while they’re here might cause them to stay longer. When people arrive in a city, they usually have somewhat of an itenerary. They’ve also usually got flexibility. If someone is in from out of town and they hear that there is an international fireworks competition taking place within the proximity of their trip, they might just decide to hang on an extra day and take in one of the shows.

That tourist is now spending extra on another night in their hotel, on their rental car, and food for the day. Perhaps they’re staying with relatives, but they’re sure to purchase something somewhere on that extra day. Darren also mentioned that “It’s not particularly benefitting the local businesses (regardless, they’re business that don’t need much help).” I strongly suspect that if you were to talk to the extra staff on at Milestone’s or the Boathouse on English Bay who are getting extra hours and extra tips on those four days, and will spend that extra cash in and around the city they would disagree (or complain that working means they can’t go out and enjoy that “worthless” event). Same goes for the countless hotdog and refreshment vendors who will cash in bigtime on those four days, and spend their commission on whatever it is they spend their money on.

Of course the corporations that own almost everything these days will cash in on the profits, but even though the trickle down doesn’t happen as it ideally should, the benefits are there.

What do you all think? Am I totally off my rocker? Can we all put up with a few days of distraction and disruption in our everyday routine for the betterment of the city?

I just noticed that our friendly neighbourhood weiner vendor bears a striking resemblance to big boy.

He even struck a pose (albeit unintentionally) this morning as I walked past, one arm in the air (leaning on a tree) with a pensive, yet gleeful look on his face.

I had a very good birthday weekend. Now I am exhausted, and will go collapse on my bed and let the fan blow lukewarm air at me.

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone!

Goodnight.

In case any of you were wondering when and where the festivites will be, I will be at Roosters Country Cabaret tomorrow night from 7pm-???

I understand that due to a combination of distance, and a distinct dislike of country music, many of my faithful readers will not likely show up, and that is ok.

If I receive adequate feedback, however, I will plan some festivities for later in the week, or early next week involving most likely the Shark Club in Burnaby, where we can drink, dine, and be merry.

I’m not going to bother with any sort of e-vite yet, but leave a comment if you think you might want to come out and do dinner on Thursday August 7th. If nobody replies or comments by let’s say August 1st, It ain’t gonna happen people, so it’s up to you.

1. If your life were a movie, what would the title be?
“Just Jen”.

2. What songs would be on the soundtrack?
This is totally not a chronological list, or an all inclusive one. They’re just songs that remind me of certain times and events in my life.

My Life (in a Nutshell) - Barenaked Ladies
If I Fall - Barenaked Ladies
Grade Nine - Barenaked Ladies
Courage - The Tragically Hip
Gift Shop - The Tragically Hip
Hockey Song - The Tragically Hip
Sunshine on my Shoulders - John Denver
Killing me Softly - The Fugees
She’s More - Keith Urban
Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Baby got Back - Sir Mix A Lot
Sailing - Christopher Cross
Shiny Happy People - REM
Bed of Roses - Bon Jovi
It’s my Life - Bon Jovi
I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing - Aerosmith

I could really go on with that list for days, but I won’t.

3. Would it be a live-action film or animated? Why?
Totally Live Action.

4. Casting: who would play you, members of your family, friends, etc?
I would totally play me. Failing that, Reese Witherspoon could play me.
Sally Field = Mom, Kevin Spacey = Dad, Just because of their personalities, not so much on the looks.
I guess I’d have to get Henrich and Daniel Sedin to play my brothers, because I can’t think of any other famous twins.
I think Cletis T. Judd would play Brian (my boyfriend) just because he’s so sweet and caring, but so funny.

5. Describe the movie preview/trailer.
Perhaps “Little House on the Prarie” meets “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”.

Blogging has made me a bad friend. Instead of actually checking up on my friends with an e-mail or a phone call, I just read their blogs. It’s gotten to the point that I don’t even comment on their lives. I just think my encouraging/well wishing/friendly thoughts to myself, and assume that they know how I feel.

This has led me into an awkward situation.

It was Devon’s birthday over the weekend, and although I couldn’t attend her festivities, I wished her well in her e-vite (although the well-wishing was included in my explanation of why I couldn’t come). I meant to get her a card or send an e-card or even just an e-mail or phone call or something but I was a little busy cleaning up the camping gear, and work got a little hectic.

I might’ve been able to buck up and get a “sorry I fucked up and didn’t get this before but happy birthday anyway” card - but then I went and read her post-birthday entries. Devon had a good birthday. I commenced thinking “Happy Birthday Devon, here’s to another year as good as or better than the last, well wishes etc. etc. etc. and we’ll go out for birthday beers soon.”

Unfortunately habit took over and the thought was where it ended. No comment, no card, no nothing. And we all know where the road paved with good intentions leads.

So here it is, Thursday, 6 days after her birthday. And here I am, feeling like an ass, looking like a bad friend, and all the while thinking the best thoughts possible about everyone in my life. So apologies for my behaviour as of late if any of my friends are feeling neglected. I care about you, I really do!

Perhaps my New Year’s resolution (because a new year of life on earth starts for me on Sunday) will be to reach out to those I call friends and let you all know exactly how much you mean to me! (or you can all just tell me I’m a bad friend and to fuck off).

I’ve had pretty good luck with roommates thus far. Unfortunately, that appears to be running kinda low lately. My roommate doesn’t steal from me or break my stuff or anything like that. She’s actually very kind and generous.

Unfortunately she’s a neurotic, forgetful, scattered spaz. And those of you who know me will know that I have a very very low tolerance for stupid people.

I will now commence a lengthy rant about my roommate. Hopefully she doesn’t read this (or if she does, she’ll get the hint)…

The Tour de Gastown is going on outside my office windows as I work away this evening. Hundreds of men and women on their street bikes are whipping along a route that takes them from Water (@ Cambie) around a hairpin at Cordova, along Cordova, down Carrall, and back down Water to Cambie again.

It’s pretty entertaining, although getting up and down off the desk/window ledge to look down on it is a bit of a hassle, heh.

In any case, seeing all these increadibly fit people whipping past every minute or so in their spandex is definitely making me want to start in on my fitness regime again. Perhaps tomorrow.

It’s hot. Damn hot. My apartment is like an oven, and I am experiencing the woes of having such a hot apartment without a swimming pool to compensate (something I was naieve enough to underuse in my last apartment and therefore figured I could live without).

It doesn’t even cool down at night in here. Just keeps holding the heat in so it gets hotter and more uncomfortable each day. I even look forward to going to work, just so I can be in an air conditioned building (oh yah, and cuz I like my job).

And as it gets hotter and hotter, and harder and harder to sleep, and I swell from the heat to elephantine proportions, I get crankier and crankier and crankier. Is it too much to ask for to have a decent night’s sleep or somewhere to go and hide from the insane heat? Apparently so.

The huge bitch of it all though, is that I can’t even buy an air conditioner, because I don’t have any standard windows. I’ve got sliding glass doors throughout - which is great for light and the wraparound balcony, but useless for installing window features.

Does anyone have any suggestions for beating the heat? I’ve tried everything I can think of (cool shower/bath, drinking lots of water, cool compress on the back of the neck, a big fan) - and none of it is anywhere near adequate for the uncomfortable sweatshop I’m finding myself living in.

Overheard in the bowels of Gastown from a street vendor to a vagrant:

So, my birthday is coming up in a few days (Sunday the 27th for those of you who didn’t know), and I figured I’d shamelessly ask all of my loyal readers to donate to my impending present. I have included an easy “make a donation” button through paypal for your ease and convenience.

I know many of you are as poor and starving and financially insecure as I am - and in that case, a hearty handshake and some well wishes are more than enough.

But I’m sure there are at least a few of you out there who’ve got a few bucks to spare and would like to contribute to the “peechie needs a digital camera for her birthday that she can’t afford” fund. Thanks in advance to all of you who contribute!

Or just show up at my house in the near future with beer.

some real advice for Real Women. Shamelessly stolen from Social Reject who stole it from someone else, etc.

You all get to read this, because I just got home from the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, and am damn tired with an assload of dirty laundry to clean up.

Perhaps I’ll write more tomorrow.

Carol Shields has died of cancer.

I never really thought about what Canadian culture is - it’s so much easier to define it as what it isn’t - until I went to University. Even then, it took my endeavor to take a couple classes on Canadian books, music, film, etc. to make me really think of it as valuable and important.

Now I try to pay closer attention to where my culture is coming from, and make an effort to absorb Canadian things. It’s very different, and in our very americanized culture, sometimes hard to absorb - but I think the act of making the effort to do it, is more important than what I may or may not get out of it.

What do you think about the Canadian Culture Industry?

I only say cheese because it’s a protein food, and therefore, you can eat it on the atkins diet. My weight obsessed roommate was asking if I knew any success (or horror) stories about people who have done the atkins diet.

I tried it for a day, got a stupifying headache, gave up and ate a bagel and a cup of coffee with extra cream and sugar.

So I’ll throw it out to the masses: give me your diet stories (Atkins or otherwise) and I’m going to saunter my fat ass off to my dinner of ice cream and ciabatta buns.
